Bertha Shelton Obituary

Mrs. Bertha Shelton was born to the Union of Linnie and Walter Curtis Reed on April 24, 1931, in Henning, Tennessee.  She graduated from Lauderdale County High School, on May 26, 1949.  She moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1950, and married Ernest J. Shelton on August 18, 1951. Through this union were born four children. They were married for approximately 22 years.

 Bertha lived in Puerto Rico for two years, and traveled the country, as a United States Air Force military wife, while married to Ernest Shelton. She touched the community through her Home Child Care Provider Services for over forty years.  She was known, as mom, Mama Shelton, Mother Shelton, Grandma, and most recently Granny, to all the children that passed through her doors, early in the morning, and late in the evening. 

She served in the Nursery Ministry at Second Baptist Church.  She was a member of the Booster Club at Central High School.  She was preceded in death by her mother Linnie Reed and her father Curtis Reed; her siblings, Booker T. Epps, Sr., Mary Frances Harris, Curtis Epps, and Shirley Reed.

 Bertha is survived by her children:  Larry E. Shelton (Maryland), Loretta Shelton (Georgia), Stanley W. Shelton (Mahlet) (Washington), and Dierdre A. Shelton (Maryland); and her siblings: Ann Louise Givens (Laurel), Minnie Reed, Ernestine Brackens (Eddie), Irma Williams (Charles), Eugene Reed, Linda Reed, Brenda Reed, and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Jean Epps;  and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 30th at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Visitation 10:00 A.M.  Interment Forest Hill Cemetery.
