Mary Butler Obituary

Mary E. Butler was born August 5, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri.  She was the daughter of Alvin and Scottie (Heard) Franks, and the seventh of nine children born to this union.  Her parents, brothers (Joseph and Alvin, Jr.), sister (Scottie), and daughter (Chatyra Lynne Spriggs) preceded her in death.  Mary resided in Kansas City, Missouri her entire life and was married to Festus Butler.

Mary – affectionately called “MaeMae”, “Titi”, or “Auntie” by her family and friends – was educated in the Kansas City, Missouri School District, and received her high school diploma from Central Sr. High School in 1970. She then began her career at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in May of 1972, where she worked for over 35 years until her retirement in September of 2007.  Mary was a member of Christ Temple North under the leadership of Pastor Johnnie Fields, until her health prevented continued attendance.

Mary was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with all of her siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  As a teen and young adult, she liked to go dancing with her family and friends.  She doted on her fur-baby, Star, who preceded her in death.  Later in life, she loved going to “the boat” (the casino) to eat and play slots.  Mary’s greatest passion was shopping for handbags.  QVC and Amazon Prime were her best friends, and she taught her family how to work hard and get the best of everything!  She shopped for all of her nieces and nephews on a regular basis and took care of everyone she knew.  Mary checked on her loved ones every chance she got and was always willing to lend an ear to anyone in need.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Festus Butler; her sisters Armentha Young of Kansas City, Missouri; Wilda Beamon of Katy, Texas; Sarah (Earl) Weatherspoon of Overland Park, Kansas; Rita (Johnnie) Harris of Florissant, Missouri; and Cora (Alfred) Lyons of Kansas City, Missouri; her best friends, Lisa Brownlee and Vanessa Massey; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and many, many other extended family members and friends.  She will be dearly missed by all.  Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2019 at Watkins Heritage Chapel 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. KCMO 64130.  Visitation 10:00 a.m.  Interment Mt.
