Virginia Olivia Edwards, 88, Independence Missouri made her transition June 9, 2019. Mrs. Edwards was born June 8th, 1931 in Moundville Alabama the daughter of Albert and Ethel (Lavendar) Witherspoon. After graduation from Hale County Training School in Greensburg Alabama, she moved to Ypsilanti Michigan. There she met Air Force officer, Milford Zadock Edwards. They soon married and moved to Independence Missouri. To their union was born a daughter and son, Mildred and Norvell. Both she and her husband were employed with the Independence Postal Service. During her career, she embraced volunteerism. Virginia joined a Independence Women’s Civic organization and worked with the Salvation Army. She rang bells and collected food and clothing items. Because of her work and dedication, she received the Salvation Army’s Outstanding Volunteer award. After 32 years of service with the Post Office, Virginia worked for the Independence School District as a Teacher’s aide. She later worked for Truman’s Library for 10 years. She was an avid gardener and a talented singer enjoyed cooking and Gardening. Second Baptist Church of Independence was her life, and joy. There she found peace and fellowship. Singing in the Choir, interacting with children and sharing a laugh with her church family were her greatest pleasures. She always looked forward to the next Sunday service. How fitting she made her transition with her Second Baptist Family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milford Zadock Edwards and son, Norvell Zadock Edwards and brothers, James and Searlie Witherspoon. She is survived by her daughter Millie Edwards Nottingham and son-in-law Stephen Leslie Nottingham of Kansas City Missouri, and brothers, John Witherspoon, Kansas City Missouri and Frank Witherspoon, Ypsilanti Michigan as well as several Nieces and Nephews, extended family and friends. Memorial financial donations are humbly requested and be forwarded to the church, Second Baptist Church 116 E. White Oak Street Independence, Mo. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Second Baptist Church 116 E. White Oak Street Independence, Mo. Visitation 9:00 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Mo.
