Edna Collins Obituary

Edna Mae Brown was born on June 29, 1927 in Vicksburg, MS. She departed this life quietly on July 27, 2020 at 10:03am.

She was the oldest of four children born to Charles and Matilda Brown, who preceded her in death along with her siblings Charles Jr, Norma Lee Jackson and Barbara Jean Brown. She began her life’s journey in Vicksburg, MS as a young child, attending St. Mary’s Catholic School. Coming into her teen years, she attended the historic Magnolia High School. On March 19, 1946, she entered wedded bliss with the love of her life, Emmitt J. Collins. To this union, was born one child Deloris Jean (both who preceded her in death). They moved to Kansas City in 1948. There she became a member of Friendship Baptist Church in 1953.

She prided herself in being a perfectionist as a seamstress making wedding gowns, all types of clothing and elaborate hats. Sewing was truly a passion for her. She delighted friends and family by making them customed designed attire. She was a member of The Hat Club for several years. She retired from American Formal Wear as a tailor in 1982. Edna was also an extraordinary cook and baker. She made the best peach cobbler this side of the Mississippi. She loved to travel. She would travel all over the country every summer for family reunions. Las Vegas was one of her favorite vacation spots. That’s where she celebrated her 80th birthday.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her grandchildren, Vaughnita Jones (John L.), Lisa Canady, Eric Mitchell (Patricia) and Emmitt Mitchell (Michelle); son-in-law James Mitchell (Raquel); great grandchildren, ChaunCharae (Matthew), Joshua,  Shon,  James (Aisha), Brandan, Shane, Jasmine, Bernard II, and Yurhoness; great-great grandchildren Alyse, Treyton, Shanell, Romeo, Leonardo and Xavier; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
