Geneva Mae Means transitioned from her earthly dwelling to her immortal home on July 24, 2020. Geneva M. Franklin was born on July 20, 1945, to the union of Jerome Franklin & Rosalie Scott Franklin in Melville, Louisiana. She was the eldest of four children. She spent her early years living in Melville and Alexandria, Louisiana . At the age of 14, she came to Kansas City, Missouri, to live with her aunt, LuBirtha Bushnell. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1963. Upon graduating she worked for Tension Envelope Company. She bore a son, Jiro K. Means, who was born in 1965. She started working for the United States Postal Service in 1971. Geneva loved her job and was able to work in different capacities, while employed at the USPS.
She rose up the ranks, becoming a supervisor. After thirty years of being a dedicated employee, she retired in 2001. Geneva married Mearon L. Means, in 1971. To this union was born a daughter, Jennifer L. Means. Geneva was a loving mother. She was an ardent supporter of her children’s activities and encouraged them to excel at any endeavor they pursued. She was a socially active woman. She was a member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). While a member, they selected her as “Woman of the Year”. Also, she was an avid member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors (NAPS). She was able to attend several conventions throughout the country, on behalf of the local chapter. She received her Associates Degree, from Longview Community College. She was a faithful follower of Christ.
Geneva was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church for many years, under the leadership of the late Rev A. L. Johnson, Sr. She served in many capacities as a member. She was a Sunday School teacher and secretary, Vacation Bible School teacher, Thousand Dollar #1 Club President and choir member. Geneva loved her church family and was a delegate to several Baptist Conventions. She later moved her membership, to St Stephens Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Eric Belt. She served until her health no longer allowed her to attend church services. Although she could no longer attend physically she continued to receive bulletins from the church to stay up to date on church activities. Geneva is preceded in death by her husband Mearon L. (Wren) Means, her father and mother Jerome and Rosalie Scott Franklin, her grandparents Norwood and Hester Franklin( father), and Benjamin Scott and Mary Jane Jones (mother), and her brother-in-law, Alfred Oakman.
Geneva is survived by 2 children, Jiro K. Means (DeAndra) and Jennifer L. Means; One sister, A. Marie Oakman; Two brothers, Jerome Franklin and Leon Franklin ( Patricia); Two nieces, whom she loved dearly, Rebecca Oakman and Charlotte Oakman; One great grandniece, Jasmine Oakman and one great grandnephew Christopher Oakman; An important mother figure, her aunt, Mrs. Sedonia Lacey(James); Irene Hudson, cherished cousin-sister and a host of cousins, family and friends.
Services for Geneva Means will be Tuesday, August 4,2020 at 12:00 p.m. at Watkins Heritage Chapel 4000 Emanuel Clever II Blvd., Kansas City Mo 64130. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.
