Jannie M. Coates was born in Ringgold, Louisiana on March 28, 1937, to the union of Sally and Orvester Cunningham. Jannie was the youngest of five children. When Jannie was five years old, the family moved to Joplin, Missouri, where she grew up and attended school. After graduating from high school, Jannie went on to attend Lincoln University, in Jefferson City, Missouri. It is there where she met and later married the love of her life, George Henry Coates. They became the proud parents of two daughters, Tawanda and Terrena.
Jannie was brought up in the Baptist church, and it was there that she accepted Christ at an early age. Later, she joined the West Paseo Christian Church, (which became Swope Parkway United Christian Church), with her husband. She remained an active member of the church, serving as a member of the Diaconate and Ushers, a member of Disciples Women, and participated in numerous other committees within the church, until her health began to decline.
For 35 years, Jannie was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, where she first started working as a Deputy Entry Operator, and advanced to become an Accountant.
After her retirement, Jannie enjoyed being a homemaker. She often cooked meals for the sick, elderly and bereaved, and made rolls for family and friends.
