Marcheita Bush Obituary

Marcheita Vivian (Jefferson) Bush closed her eyes for the final time at the age of 96 peacefully in her sleep on December 2, 2020. She was born on April 2, 1924 in Sedalia, Missouri.  Marcheita and her twin sister Juanita were the third and fourth children of the late Marvin Odell and Nadine (Blackstone) Jefferson.  Marcheita graduated from C.C. Hubbard High School in Sedalia in 1942.  Marcheita began her collegiate career at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo in the fall of 1942 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Minor in French in June of 1945. While a student at Lincoln University, she became of member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Marcheita furthered her education at Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA where she earned a master’s degree in English in 1946. She returned to Jefferson City, Mo. and took a teaching position at Lincoln University as a Professor in the English Department.  Marcheita married the love of her life, Jackson Bush, Jr. on August 3, 1947 in the home of her parents surrounded by family and friends.

To this union five children were born, Jack, Janice, Juanita, Lynne, and Nadine. Marcheita left Jefferson City after her husband Jack took a teaching and coaching position in Caruthersville, Mo.  They lived there for a few years and when an opportunity came, they moved to Kansas City, Mo.  This has been her home for over 70 years. Marcheita was an awesome and passionate educator and taught many of Kansas City’s best and brightest scholars. Several of them went on to become educators, lawyers, doctors, and politicians.  She taught English at R.T. Coles Junior and Vocational High School. Marcheita retired early from teaching to take care of her family.  After sending her children to college she decided to come out of retirement and taught at Metropolitan Community College – Penn Valley Campus and later taught English and Religion at Bishop Hogan High School.

She was a committed member of St. Louis Catholic Church for many years and later became a member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church where she worked as the Director of Social Ministries which included the day-to-day operations of running the food pantry. Marcheita was an active member of the National Court, Nights of Peter Claver. Marcheita is preceded in death by her husband, Jackson Bush, Jr. of 73 years and is survived by her 5 children, Jack (Jackie) of Kansas City, Mo., (Ollisha, Leslie, Jonathan, Jordan, Jaclyn), Janice (Robert) of Gainesville, Fl.,(Mark, Amber, Jason, Marchieta), Juanita (DeWayne) of Independence, Mo., (Kimberly, Kristen, Travis, Trenton), Lynne (James) of Kansas City, Mo., (Christopher, Anthony, Kenneth, Erica) and Nadine of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., (Louis, Adam, Stephen), 20 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and friends. 

A Public Visitation will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, December 6th at Watkins Heritage Chapel 4000 Emanuel Cleaver Blvd KCMO 64130. A Private Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on December 7th at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.
