Anthony Wayne McKenzie was born in Kansas City, Kansas on August 25, 1954, to the union of Hiawatha L. Barnes and John W. McKenzie, Jr. Anthony went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 16, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father John W. McKenzie, Jr.
Anthony attended Seven Oaks Elementary graduating from Westport High School in 1972. In 1973, Anthony joined the United States Airforce where he served for 2 years, stationed in Thailand. He also attended Penn Valley Community College, KCMO.
Anthony was employed as property manager for the Kansas City Housing Authority at Wayne Minor, at the Kansas City Star and with his father John at McKenzie Heating and Cooling.
Anthony was currently employed at the Veterans Administration hospital, where he started in 2003, until the time of his death. During his employment with the Veterans Administration, he served as shop steward and eventually was elected President of the union, serving in that position for many years. He continued to help his fellow employees even after serving as union President.
Anthony accepted Christ at an early age. He joined Second Baptist Church January 1, 1988, and was a faithful dedicated member for 34 years.
Anthony taught Sunday school, participated in the Grill for Glory Evangelistic Outreach, Second Baptist Men and was a former member of the Trustee Board where he served for several years in various positions. He had a kind heart and loved to help others.
Anthony played an intricate part in forming and implementing the Rich and Mercy AA Group and because of his faithfulness, dedication and generosity, the group continues to meet.
Anthony enjoyed (talking!) discussing current events, watching sports and cutting his grass every week, as well as barbecuing and spending time with family and friends.
Anthony leaves to cherish his loving memory his mother, Hiawatha L. McKenzie; brother, Jerome W. McKenzie (Lisa); niece, Alesa S. Duncan (Jason); nephew, Brooks J. McKenzie; great-nieces, McKenzie J. Duncan and Ashley E. Duncan; his “Little Man”, grandson, Marquise Ford; daughters, Kenya Clardy, LaTasha Clardy, Naymonic Baker; a host of relatives and friends and the Second Baptist Church family
Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 30, 2022, 11:00am at Second Baptist Church. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9am-11am at the church. Service conducted by Watkins Heritage Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
