Mr. Davenport G. Donaldson

November 16, 1953 ~ July 14, 2023 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Davenport Garrett Donaldson was born November 16, 1953, in Kansas City, MO to Davenport and Bettylu Donaldson ( Cespedes) and departed this life on July 14th.   He was the 3rd of 4 children and the oldest boy. He attended St. Louis Catholic School through 8thgrade and De La Salle Catholic High School graduating in 1971.

At De La Salle he was a standout football player scoring the winning touchdown in the State Championship Game.  He received several honors including 1st Team All-State, top 100 football recruits for college scholarships and was recruited by all Big Eight colleges. He accepted the scholarship offer from Kansas University and began his college career there.  However, a change in coaching staff precipitated his leaving KU and transferring to Benedictine College in Atchison, KS on a football scholarship.  There he sustained a career ending injury during a game and left school.

Garrett found work at UPS where he worked the night shift until he retired after 20 years.  He later worked in maintenance for Woodley Janitorial Services and Burtin & Associates.  For a time, he delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly and infirmed, work that he greatly enjoyed.

While recovering from his football injury he was introduced to the Jehovah’s Witnesses denomination by two Witnesses who offered him a free Home Bible Study.  His study of the Bible changed his life. In The Summer of 1980 he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses at their annual district convention in Wichita, KS. He later became a full-time pioneer devoting 90 hours each month witnessing from door-to-door and conducting home bible studies with anyone interested.

Garrett was a true dog lover having taken in and cared for many dogs over the years.  His best friend growing up was his first dog, a German Shepherd whom he named Oddjob after a character in a James Bond movie. He never met a dog he didn’t like and took in strays housing as many as five simultaneously at one point.  Keeping up with the dogs helped to keep him in shape, as did regular bicycle rides all around the city with fellow Elder Brother Allen.

As a Witness, Garrett enjoyed many congregation and circuit privileges, but he remained humble and was often spoken of by fellow Witnesses as that caring, selfless Brother ever ready to roll up his sleeves and help others. He even went so far as to occasionally open his home and provide food and shelter for homeless individuals.

During his senior years as Garrett became ill, he found comfort in being able to listen to congregation meetings twice a week on the phone and later on Zoom, as well as watching programs on

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his three siblings: Grace James (Ivan), Dianne Cleaver (Emanuel),and Bennett Donaldson; also, his first cousin Suzanne Lewis; a host of nieces and nephews and second cousins, as well as by fellow Witnesses and many friends and neighbors.
