Mr. Edward Miller Obituary

Edward L. Miller Sr was born in Kansas City Missouri on March 27, 1925 to Walter and Lucille (Henderson) Miller. He was preceded in death by his entire family. His parents; Walter and Lucille Miller, Walton Roland Miller, Alma Antoinette Lewis, Gloria Marie Winfield, and Gertrude Jane Bell, and an infant Lucille Miller. Also, preceding him in death was his lifelong friend Kayo (Calvin) Dolman.

Edward attended schools in the Kansas City area and became a track and field stand out at Lincoln High School. He also served as a Sargent in the military during WWII. After defending our country, he went to the Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas. While there he met the love of his life, Trevia Darlene Shelton. They married on March 16, 1947 after three months of courting. After a brief stint at Staley Milling Company, Lloyd studied to become a Chiropractor but found that financially he would do better to find a job instead of continuing to pursue a career as a doctor. He eventually became an employee of the United States Postal Service where he retired.

After learning that he would not be considered for a VA loan to build a home for his family because of his ethnicity, Lloyd decided to build a home with his own resources. He always spoke of several neighbors who worked construction and would show up out of the blue to offer assistance of which he was very grateful. Lloyd, as he preferred to be called built and remodeled homes around the greater area. He also loved to fish and fed his family many times with the delicious fish he caught in local lakes. He was passionate about the sport of fishing and was on the banks with his fishing buddies most weekends and was eager to teach anyone who wanted to know how to fish. He had that same passion around virtually everything he did. Whether it was carpentry, mathematics, fishing or gardening, he was accomplished in them all.

He was a founding member of Good Samaritan Baptist church in 1956 and was also a member of Swope Park United Methodist church, and Concord Fortress of Hope, after professing his faith at New Hope Baptist church.

The marriage of Lloyd and Trevia lasted for 70 years and produced four children. Edward L. Miller Jr. (Carolyn), Roland E. Miller (Diana), Trevia L. Jimenez, and Bettye L. Miller, as well as 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
