Obituary

Jimmie Brister was born to Hilliard Ray and Mary Magdalene Brister on May 11, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. Jimmie was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and received the gift of the Holy Ghost.

He graduated from high school in Detroit, Michigan, and later relocated to Kansas City, Missouri. Jimmie worked at the juvenile detention center and Kansas City Missouri School District as a custodian. For approximately thirty years, Jimmie served as a custodian and eventually a supervisor at Metropolitan Community College – Penn Valley. He then retired. After retirement, he worked as a school bus monitor, crossing guard, and caregiver.

On June 1, 2002, Jimmie married Marilyn Pickens at Swope Park in Kansas City, Missouri. Their blended family included four daughters: Elizabeth Dorcea Brister Gotow, Pearl Gotow, Teoyna Martin, and Keena Tolefree.

Jimmie was a compassionate, supportive, and loving person. He had a beautiful smile that would brighten up any room. He was very intelligent and fiscally responsible. Jimmie loved to read the Holy Bible and books authored by Dr. Michael Youssef. He encouraged and motivated his grandchildren to seek a higher education and be responsible adults. He never missed a birthday. Jimmie really touched a lot of people’s lives.

Jimmie believed Toyota was the best car manufacturer. You couldn’t get him to buy any other vehicle. His favorite things to do included spending time with family, visiting friends, fishing, watching sports, eating good food, and teaching life lessons to children and adults.

Jimmie Brister, 79, departed from this life on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father, Hilliard Ray Brister; mother-in-law, Lucy Thomas; three brothers, Rodgers Brister, Henry Brister, and Harold Brister; sister, Dorothy Gabriel; son, Duron Pickens; brother-in-law, Calvin Pickens; and two sisters-in-law, Myra Shelton and Cynthia Thomas. Jimmie is survived by his wife, Marilyn Brister; mother, Mary White; brother, John White; three sisters, Esther White-Luke, Martha Matthews, and Ruth Perry; four daughters, Elizabeth Dorcea Brister Gotow, Pearl Gotow, Teoyna Martin, and Keena Tolefree; son-in-law, Eric Tolefree; two brothers-in-law, Gary Luke and Russell Pickens; two sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Pickens and Cassaundra Pickens; little brother/friend, Cecil Gotow; longtime friend, Richard Dickerson; fishing partner, Richard Johnson; family friend, Jacqueline Griffin; many nieces and nephews; eleven grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, 2 pm at Watkins Heritage Chapel, visitation 1 pm. Interment Brooking Cemetery. Services conducted by Watkins Heritage Chapel 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd Kansas City, Missouri  64130 816-861-3030
