Obituary


Willie David Smith, Jr. was born on August 27, 1945, to Willie D. Smith Sr. and Mary H. Smith in Shaw, Mississippi. He lived there until he was nine years old, then relocated, with his mother and siblings, to Kansas City, Missouri. Willie is preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Ann Smith; his Mother, Mary H. Smith; his Father, Willie D. Smith, Sr.; his sister, Edna McNeal; and brother, Charles Smith.


Willie attended Wendall Phillips Grade School, and Lincoln Jr. Middle School, where he began working at the corner drug store.


Willie’s Senior year at Lincoln High School was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. While serving, he earned medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Willie received an Honorably Discharge from the Army in December of 1971.


Willie has two daughters, Toni and Traci.


Willie married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Ann Momom, on October 18, 1968. They remained married for 41 years until her death on May 31, 2009. To this union, two sons, Ronnie Smith and Darrel Smith, were born.


Those left to cherish Willie’s memory include: two sons: Ronnie Smith (Kelli) of Kansas City, MO and Darrell Smith (Debbi Smallwood) of Raytown, MO; two daughters: Toni Sonko (Musa) of Vancouver, WA, and Traci Jefferson of Oakland, CA; three brothers: Arthur Robinson of Kansas City, MO, Tommie Hill (Carolyn) of Grain Valley MO, and David Smith (Erica) of Blue Springs, MO; three sisters: Ruby Martin (Greg) of Kansas City, MO; Deloris Jordan (Kenneth) of Denver, CO; and Barbara Hollis of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Grandchildren: Adrienne Smith, Jerron McCallop, Jaylynn Smith, Devin Smith, Don Monroe, Darrell Smith II, Jerron McCallop, and Trey Dudley, and Great Grandchildren: Bellami Smith, Madison Monroe, Aliyah Dudley, Jai McCallop, Hezekia Dudley, and Ja’Leia McCallop, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.


Willie enjoyed spending time with his family, and he will truly be missed.

Services will be held Monday, September 18, 2023, 10 am at Watkins Heritage Chapel visitation 9 am Interment in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.


Funeral services will be held Monday, September 18, 2023, 10am at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery, LVNKS. Visitation will from 9am-10am at the church. Services conducted by Watkins Heritage Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
