Evangelist Bernice Ruth Porter, was born on May 6, 1928, in Guntersville, AL. She was the eighth child of 11, born to Warren and Arizona Henderson. Her parents and 7 siblings—Carrie Bell, Cathleen, L.C. “Naughty,” Willard “Hanks”, Warren, Nell, Bobby and Clara—preceded her in death. She was raised on a family farm at Wyeth Mountain, which consisted of many acres of choice farm real estate that Warren Sr. and Arizona had purchased in their wisdom in the early 1900s. As a child, Bernice picked cotton, fed the chickens and hogs, and milked the cows. As a young adult, Bernice and her sister, Helen, moved to New York where she obtained her G.E.D. and enrolled in Cosmetology training. She graduated from Russell School of Beauty in 1949. She later moved to Gary, IN, where she owned and operated her own beauty salon. In 1962, she moved to Kansas City, MO, and opened the Artistic Beauty Salon.
Evangelist Bernice Porter believed the Lord saved her in 1968 and filled her with the Holy Ghost. She was a faithful member of Faith Deliverance Church of God in Christ for many years. She was member of the Mother’s Board for 25 years; she played the piano and was an active member until her death.
Family was extremely important throughout Bernice’s lifetime. She was always very close with her siblings and family members and never missed a family reunion, loved taking road trips, and both cooking and hosting family dinners. Even at the age of 93, Bernice was still actively driving her car and living independently, and never seemed to miss an opportunity to deliver holiday treats or donated goods to family and friends.
Bernice leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Helen Kendrick of Kansas City, Mo. and Mary Baker of Guntersville, Al., many nieces and nephews, a host of other family members and special friends.
Memorial services will be held 11am on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the Faith Deliverance COGIC 4201 E. 53rd Terr. KCMO. For further information call Watkins Heritage Chapel at 816-861-3030. Condolences may be shared on our website.
