Mrs. Edna Ray Obituary

Edna Delores (Nixon) Ray was born January 8, 1942, in Wilmington, North Carolina to Haywood and Hannah (Pierce) Nixon and departed this life on January 23, 2024. She was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, David Nixon, and sister, Delma Nixon Brown.

Edna attended primary and secondary schools in Wilmington, North Carolina and graduated from Williston Senior High School in 1960. After high school, she attended Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she graduated from the College of Nursing in 1964.

Edna spent most of her nursing career with the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Registered Nurse in VA Hospitals in both Lincoln, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri.

Edna was married to Herman Ray, her friend, lover, and partner, for 58 years. Together they raised and nurtured two beautiful daughters, Keely Ann and Denise Yvette to adulthood. After retirement from the VA Hospital, she worked with Herman in his CPA practice in Kansas City, Missouri and Wilmington, North Carolina.

Edna loved and enjoyed supporting her five grandchildren in all of their activities. Family was very important to Edna, and she loved her nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, and cousins deeply.

Edna loved to read, work in the yard, and help in her local church, Bannister Road Baptist Church. She also loved sports and talking sports with her grandsons and son-in-laws. One of her favorite poems is by Helen Steiner Rice entitled Brighten the Corner Where You Are. Edna’s desire was to be a light wherever she was. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband (Herman), her daughters, Keely Ann (Joe) and Denise Yvette (Randy), her brother Robert (Pauline), sister-in-law Eulalee, sister-in-law Cherrie, sister-in-law Irma Joyce (Joe), sister-in-law Barbara (Will), and brother-in-law (Ike), grandchildren Stephen, Nathaniel, Kaitlyn, Jared, and Elise, and a host of nieces and nephews.
