Mrs. Wilhelmina Stewart Obituary

Wilhelmina L. (Biggins) Stewart was born September 3, 1934, to Thora L. Thornton and Herbert Biggins.  She departed this earthly life on February 23, 2024.  She was proceeded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edward B. Stewart Sr., parents Thora L. Thornton and Herbert Biggins, brothers Frank Thornton Sr., Herbert Biggins, Ronald Biggins, sister Winifred Thornton, son Edward B. Stewart Jr., and Great Granddaughter Tianna Williams. 

Mrs. Wilhelmina L. Stewart served in the Greater Kansas City corporate and non-profit sector for over 50 years.  Mrs. Stewart was committed to Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center and Museum since its inception. She served as the Cultural Programmer of the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center under the Executive Director of the late Yvonne Wilson for nearly 20 years and served as acting Director until a new Director was hired.  At the time of her passing, she was serving as the President of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center and Museum. Prior to her role at Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center and Museum, Mrs. Stewart worked as a Community Programmer for Penn Valley Community College, an administrative assistant and law clerk.  Mrs. Stewart graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1952.  She then attended college at Park College in Parkville, Missouri.  She was a life member of the NAACP, Chair of the Midwestern Region IV of Women in the NAACP (WIN) Committee, a member of the Jackson County Missouri Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, a lifelong member of the Twin Citians Club, and a recipient of “The Women of Courage” Award presented by the Kansas City Missouri Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. 

She leaves to cherish her memory, sister Gwendolyn Powell (Raytown, MO); children Edie Green (Las Vegas, NV), Robert Dennis (Overland Park, KS), Debra Stewart (Kansas City, MO), Gwendolyn Moore (George) (Birmingham, AL), Ronald Dennis (Denise) (Anaheim, CA), Joi Dennis (Kansas City, MO), Roger Dennis (Missouri), Russell Stewart (Overland Park, KS), and Richard Dennis Jr. (Kansas City, MO); grandchildren Yetra Akins (Kansas City, MO), Jason Stewart (Houston, TX), Tamara M. Bell (Ryan) (Birmingham, AL), Donte Dennis (Brandi) (Kansas City, MO), Edward M. Stewart (Houston, TX), Shanice Jackson (Portland, OR), Onia L. Morgan III (Kansas City, MO), Aiden Dennis (Anaheim, CA), Tresha Moore, Kevin Moore, Torrey Moore (Penny), and Mia Moore all of Birmingham, Alabama; 19 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and bonus children. 

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024, 12:30 pm at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ. Friends may call after 11 am. Entombment will be at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Services conducted by Watkins Heritage Chapel.  In lieu of flowers family request donations to be made to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center and Museum, 3700 Blue Parkway, Kansas City, Mo. 64130 in Wilhelmina Stewart memory.
