Ms. Joan Lewis Obituary

Mrs. Joan Audrey Lewis, age 75, departed this life on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital.  She was born August 10, 1946, to Counsel Lewis and Maxine Lewis (Houston) Baker in Kansas City, Missouri, at Phyllis Wheatley Hospital. She was preceded in death by her father, Counsel Lewis.

She attended Central High School and graduated in 1964. In 1966, she began working for the Internal Revenue Service until leaving in 1981.  She received her Associates Degree in Accounting from Penn Valley Community College and attended Rockhurst University to pursue a degree in Business/Accounting. Joan started her own bookkeeping and tax preparation business in 1983.  She was also an active member for 25 years on the River Park Townhomes Board of Directors, where she resided.  During her time on the Board, she served as a youth coordinator where she led and engaged activities for the neighborhood youth.  She spent much of her time helping others in the River Park community.

On May 16, 1970, she married James R. Lewis.  During their 51 years of marriage, they raised four children, lovingly doted on their four grandchildren, and often looked after and cared for extended family members and friends.  She shared her love of cooking, baking, sewing, and crafting with family and friends by making them homemade gifts. Joan had a loving and giving spirit and was not shy about using her voice to advocate for and help family, friends, and neighbors who were in need.

She was a member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church.
