Ms. Mary Jones Obituary

Mary L. Jones, 77, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on November 20, 2023. She was born on January 29, 1946, in Humphrey, Arkansas, to the late Wilson and Alice Smith.

Mary married Lance R Jones, Sr in February 1964 and to this union three children, Carla, April and Lance Jr.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wilson Smith, her mother, Alice Smith, and her brothers, Lonnie Smith, Wilson Smith Jr, Charles Smith, Bennie Smith, Willie Smith and Melvin Smith.

She also leaves to cherish her memory a host if nieces, nephews and friends.

Mary completed her education graduating Central High School in Kansas City Missouri.  Mary had a fulfilling career, starting at Revco soda fountain before transitioning to work at Swope Geriatric Center. Later, she cared for children in a Montessori school and provided in-home hospice care. Mary also worked part-time cleaning houses until her retirement in 2005.

She was a light that shined like no other.  Mary (Miss Mary to others) was a loving, yet down to earth person.  When she loved, she loved wholeheartedly.  Known for her generosity, she enjoyed cooking and sharing food with her neighbors.  She loved to be the cook for the holiday functions.  Best known for cooking a pot of beans and corn bread and sending a bowl next door and across the street. Or sharing the tomatoes she had grown in her garden.  Or just listening to you during a difficult time and offering advice – sometimes albeit stern.  That was part of who she was.

In her free time, Mary enjoyed working in her garden and tending to her flower bed. She found joy in keeping herself busy and nurturing her plants. Mary enjoyed spending time with her children.  Costco and in the streets all day on Saturday with Carla.   She especially enjoyed travelling and was well-travelled. Be it a cruise to the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, or on a plane somewhere or a car road trip somewhere.  She especially loved Atlanta for the Forest Park Farmers Market and St Louis for its Soulard Market and Lee’s Fried Chicken.  Later, she got adept with technology of streaming apps, and later with Facebook and Messenger with which she was able toc communicate with much of her relatives both old and young. If you didn’t see her sending a Good Morning message or a Good Night message, she was listening to her Motown oldies on her Google Box. Mary will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Carla Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; April (Tony) Lasley of Kansas City, Kansas; and son Lance (Leonardo) Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; her grandson, Master Anthony Lasley, Jr of Kansas City, Kansas; sisters, Lessie Howard of Humphrey, Arkansas; Ruby (Herb) Smith, and Faye (Oscar) Whitcomb, both of Omaha, Nebraska; brother, Calvin (Debra) Smith of Stuttgart, Arkansas,
