Ms. Ora Wells Obituary

Ora Lee Wells, age 89 passed peacefully on Friday, December 22, 2023.

Born on July 9, 1934, in Belen, MS, Ora was the daughter of Clinton and Mary White. Her paternal grandparents Matthew and Sylvia White brought Ora to Kansas City, MO where she was adopted and raised by one of their daughters and her husband, Essie and Hubert Earl Beck. The Beck’s raised three young cousins as siblings, and provided a loving and nurturing home for them, Ora (the eldest), Dorothy Terry-Everfield, and Matthew Terry who completed their family. All preceded Ora in death.

In her younger years, Ora lived on the west side of Kansas City where she attended Douglas Elementary School. At age 16, Ora was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1951; Lincoln Junior College, 1953; Weaver School of Real Estate, 1966; and she obtained a Missouri Broker’s license in 1981.

As a young professional, Ora worked at Peoples Finance as a Teller; and later with Midtown Real Estate Company and Dobi-Ty Corporation as a Realtor. She entered federal employment with the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and retired from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) after 30+ years of federal service. Upon retirement from HUD, Ora returned to Dobi-Ty to pursue her passion in real estate full time and went into business for herself as a Broker where she maintained her license until moving to Texas in 2018.

In March 1928, Ora’s parents united with Friendship Baptist Church (Friendship), where Ora was baptized by Rev. S.C. Doyle at the age of six. She was a life-long member of Friendship, and a faithful servant from youth until her passing.

Beginning in her youth and throughout her life, Ora was a devoted and extremely active participant in numerous church ministries including choir, usher board, mission, Sunday School, Sheepfold member, Board of Christian Education, Trustee, and various committees.

Ora received acknowledgement and awards for her community service and work with the Greater Kansas City Association of Real Estate Brokers; Urban League Guild; National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB); and Civil Rights Consortium. She was recognized as 100 Most Influential by the Kansas City Globe in 1995; and, appointed to the State Commission on Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing.

In 1954, Ora united in marriage to Joe Anthony Moore. A daughter, Terry Lynne was born to this union. Her second marriage was to Frank Wells Jr. in May 1976, where she became stepmother to his four children, and a grandmother of ten. Frank preceded Ora in death in June 2014.

Ora was true to herself; selfless, loved the Lord, her family, and her church. She enjoyed playing games, crossword puzzles, and reading. She also loved to cook, entertain, and travel, as she and Frank enjoyed cruising vacations with friends. Ora was a devoted wife, a loving and supportive mother, a resolute daughter and sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and colleague.

Ora leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Terry Lynne Moore, Dallas, TX; namesake and cousin, Ora Lee Cross, Houston, TX; beloved sister in Christ, Diane Dixon, Kansas City, MO; Goddaughter, Julia Dodd-Edmonds, Atlanta, GA; special beloved friend, Catherine Hunt, Raytown, MO; extended family including nieces and nephews, loving cousins, friends, former colleagues and classmates. Ora will be deeply missed by those who loved her. A special thanks to Ardent Healthcare, Flower Mound, TX and Nexus Home Healthcare, Frisco, TX for your compassionate care and support.
