Sylvester Suttington was born to George and Ruby Suttington on September 9, 1950 in Kansas City. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1968 and served in the U.S. Army (1969-1972) as an communications analyst during the Vietnam war. He received several medals and an honorable discharge in 1972. He earned a BA from Rockhurst in 1977 and retired from The Honeywell Corporation in 2005 after twenty-five years. Sylvester used his free time to establish the Kansas City Girls Basketball club (1992-2002) which saw many team members go onto play at Div I and II Universities. He later refereed girls basketball. Sylvester married Leah Russell in 1984 together they raised four children. On September 2nd, Sylvester shed this life at home surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a wife: Leah, and four children: Staci, Aaron, Phillip, & Carrena; Seventeen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eleven siblings and a host of family and friends.
There will be a family-only military honors Ceremony at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
